The Secret of the Star Hawk
PCs present: Den, Pika, Klaiton, Lyra, Yaang-ki, Daijiro
NPCs present: KK11, Jim El Largo (referred to as Jim), Captain Chabán (mentioned)
Major developments in the lives of the PCs or the long term campaign goal of rebuilding the Kingdom of Drinax:
The crew has finally located the remains of the smuggler ship Star Hawk. Inside, they have discovered cargo of incalculable military and economic value: six intact Third Imperium-manufactured nuclear warheads. If they manage to extract them from Ergo and take them to Drinax, they will represent a massive resource for the reconstruction and defense of the Kingdom.
Loose ends from the session that are unexplained or need to be followed up later in the campaign:
- How are they going to extract the six nuclear warheads from the crashed ship without cranes and with a perpetual storm?
- Where exactly is the Third Imperium underground facility on Ergo that is filled with the rest of the nuclear missiles?
- Who is the surveillance Type S Scout ship that is scanning Ergo’s orbit and looking for the sabotaged satellites?
- What really happened to Jim El Largo’s mind after the radiation exposure or the events on Ergo?
- Who is “Aparo,” the mysterious and wealthy client who hired the Star Hawk in the first place?
- Who were the natives (men and women dressed in furs) who lie dead from laser fire near the ship’s camp?
Session Joke:
The best comedic moment of the session occurred during the tense negotiation with the security android KK11. While Den tried to apply pure logic and the Third Law of Robotics by demanding shelter for a wounded human, the stubborn robot simply pointed an integrated laser at his face and told him to get lost. Immediately after, Lyra requested an audience, and the security drone put her on hold with “elevator music.” The mental image of Lyra wiggling and dancing to the rhythm of the little tune in the middle of a deadly blizzard, waiting for the killer robot to attend to her, caused the table to laugh.
Scene 1: Links, Coordinates, and Passive Sensors
PCs present: Klaiton, Lyra, Den, Yaang-ki, Daijiro, Pika
NPCs present: None
Place(s) and/or Planet(s): Camp in the mountain range and Orbit (Ergo)
Spaceships: Jinger (Unknown model, Captain Lyra), Unknown Ship (Type S Scout model, unknown captain)
Summary:
The session begins with the crew analyzing a strange numerical poem recited by Jim El Largo. Klaiton deduces that the verses contain astrogation and piloting coordinates. However, communications between the ground team (sheltered in a tent in the middle of a snowstorm) and Klaiton (in orbit) are blocked by the electromagnetic field of Ergo’s mountains. The situation gets tense when Klaiton detects an Imperial Type S Scout ship emerging in orbit and scanning the area. To avoid being discovered, Klaiton puts his ship in stealth mode and shuts down systems, leaving the ground team incommunicado and unaware of the orbital danger.
Scene 2: The Infernal Ascent
PCs present: Lyra, Den, Yaang-ki, Daijiro, Pika
NPCs present: None
Place(s) and/or Planet(s): Mountain Range (Ergo)
Spaceships: None
Summary:
Given the lack of communications, the ground team decides to follow the ascending path in search of the Star Hawk. The climb is brutal; the extreme cold and hurricane-force winds push the group’s physical endurance to the limit. Pika suffers especially from the ravages of the climate, failing almost all of her stamina checks and being on the verge of collapsing, but Den manages to keep her on her feet by injecting her with stimulants. After a day of exhausting travel, the path descends toward a small, sheltered valley where they finally spot a severely damaged Type S Scout ship that is melting snow to power its reactor.
Scene 3: Negotiations with KK11
PCs present: Den, Lyra, Yaang-ki, Daijiro, Pika
NPCs present: KK11 (Android with a circle of sensors for a face and integrated weapons. Wears the tarnished rags of a crew uniform. Archetype: The stoic and stubborn watchdog, tied to his last orders).
Place(s) and/or Planet(s): Crash Valley (Ergo)
Spaceships: Star Hawk (Type S Scout, Captain Chabán)
Summary:
The team approaches cautiously. Den steps forward with his hands raised to parley, but is intercepted by a security drone and, subsequently, by KK11, who aims a laser at him. Den tries to reason with the machine by appealing to its programming and medical necessity, but the robot refuses to let them in, stating that it is awaiting the return of Captain Chabán and First Officer Jim, who have been gone for more than 11 years. Den withdraws, annoyed. Lyra takes over, using diplomacy, reciting Jim’s poem to the machine and pretending to be a rescue team sent by him. KK11 lowers the weapon, accepts the “code,” and allows Lyra to enter the ship for a damage assessment. Meanwhile, Den discovers several corpses of Ergo natives under the snow, murdered by laser shots to the back.
Scene 4: The Logbook and the Secret of Ergo
PCs present: Lyra, Yaang-ki, Pika
NPCs present: KK11
Place(s) and/or Planet(s): Interior of the Star Hawk (Ergo)
Spaceships: Star Hawk (Type S Scout, Captain Chabán)
Summary:
Dressed in a vac-suit to protect herself from a radioactive leak from the reactor, Lyra enters the ship escorted by KK11. The android gives her a bleak damage report: the jump drive is destroyed, the sensors are melted, and the hull is compromised, although the missile turret works. In the cargo hold, Lyra discovers the true cargo that the robot is guarding: six Third Imperium nuclear warheads.
While Lyra distracts KK11 by ordering it to evaluate the ship, Yaang-ki puts on a vac-suit and, with the remote help of Pika’s software, manages to hack the ship’s computer after several days of work. They extract the logbook, revealing that Captain Chabán and Jim were hired in Szirp by someone named “Aparo.” Upon arriving on Ergo, they discovered not only secret luxury villas on a theoretically dead world, but an underground warehouse full of Imperial nuclear bombs. After stealing several to sell them, they were shot down by orbital security, which caused the accident, the captain’s death, Jim’s madness, and left KK11 jealously guarding the missiles in the frozen valley. The crew now debates how to dismantle the valuable parts of the ship and take the nuclear warheads.
